This coating method was developed to replace decorative chrome coatings such as those used to make components visually appealing, e.g. in the furniture industry, for design elements in the automotive industry or for plumbing fixtures. This innovation eliminates the need for environmentally hazardous production methods, as well as materials on the surface of the component that can pose health risks.
The concept of this coating process is based on the application of a glossy aluminum layer to a prepared base, with subsequent application of a final coat to seal the surface and protect it from scratching.
SilverTouch® is a coating system consisting of primer and a base coat, a thin aluminum film and a final coat. It is ideally suited for all types of metal and plastic commonly used in the automotive, furniture, household and electrical appliance industries.
After a wet chemical pretreatment, a primer is applied to the materials to prepare them for metallizing. An aluminum layer of around 0.10 µm is applied under high vacuum without the use of any other process gases. The result is a shiny, reflective metallic surface. After passivation, a thermal or UV-curing final coat is applied, providing the required surface hardness. The gloss level can be adjusted to achieve a glossy or matt finish for the workpiece according to the customer wishes. This makes it possible to give plastic the appearance of metal. Hues such as gold, brass and bronze are also available.
Handling and painting robots execute all of the production steps automatically. The chemicals used in this process are not harmful to the environment. SilverTouch® is distinguished by its appealing silky haptics.
